Privacy Policy
In plain words: your email address so we can send the newsletter, and some information about how you found us so we know which posts and links work. You can opt out of the advertising part at any time.
Plot & Parcel · Long Beach (“Plot & Parcel”, “we”) is an independent weekly newsletter published by ⟨operating entity name⟩, ⟨mailing address⟩. This policy covers www.theplotandparcel.com and the newsletter.
| What | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Email address and your consent to receive the newsletter | When you subscribe | To send the newsletter |
| A random visitor ID stored in your browser (local storage, not a cookie) | On your first visit | To connect your visits on this site, so we can tell which link brought you |
How you arrived: the page you landed on, the site that sent you (referrer), campaign tags in the link (UTM tags) and ad click IDs (e.g. Facebook's fbclid, Google's gclid), for your first visit and your most recent campaign visit | On visits | To know whether people find us through search, social posts, the newsletter or ads |
| Which neighborhood link and which signup form you used (e.g. a Belmont Shore link, the form at the bottom of a page) | When you subscribe | To see which pages and neighborhoods bring signups |
| Pages you view and signup events, device type (phone/desktop), visit count | On visits | To measure the site and the signup form |
| Aggregate page views via Vercel Web Analytics (no cookies, no cross-site tracking) | On visits | A second, independent count of page views |
| Bot-check signals (e.g. IP address, browser characteristics) processed by Cloudflare Turnstile | When you use the signup form | To keep automated signups out |
| Email activity: opens and link clicks, recorded by our email provider (beehiiv) and, for some links, by our own link redirect (go.theplotandparcel.com) using a one-way hashed form of your email address | When you read the newsletter | To see which stories are read |
We don't ask for your name, address or phone number. We don't collect sensitive personal information.
We don't sell your information for money.
Service providers that run parts of the site and newsletter for us: beehiiv (sends the newsletter), Vercel (hosts the site, Web Analytics), Cloudflare (bot check, email forwarding), and our database host. They may use it only to provide their service to us. We also share information if the law requires it.
Status today: off. This section describes what happens if we switch it on to measure Facebook and Instagram ads.
When it's on, the Meta Pixel (code from Meta Platforms, Inc.) loads on our pages, and our server also reports signups to Meta through its Conversions API. Meta receives: that you viewed a page or subscribed, the page address, a shared event ID (so the same signup isn't counted twice), your IP address and browser details, and Meta's own browser cookie if present. We never send Meta your email address, name or phone number, not even in hashed form.
Meta may use this to measure our ads and, under its own terms, to improve and target ads. Under California law this can count as “sharing” personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. You can opt out (section 6). If you do, or if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, the pixel doesn't load and our server sends nothing to Meta.
Your choice is saved in this browser. If you clear your browser data or use another device, choose again, or turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser and we'll honor it automatically. To opt out for your email address everywhere, email us (section 10).
If you live in California, you can ask us to: tell you what personal information we have about you and how we use it; delete it; correct it; and stop selling or sharing it. We won't treat you differently for using these rights. You can use an authorized agent. We'll confirm your request using your email address. ⟨Counsel: confirm whether the CCPA thresholds apply; keep the rights section either way.⟩
Your email address and subscription record: while you're subscribed, and for ⟨period⟩ after you unsubscribe so we honor the unsubscribe. Visit and signup records: ⟨period⟩. Subscribers who never open an email may be removed after about 30 days.
The newsletter is not meant for children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their information. We use reasonable safeguards, and keys and passwords stay on our servers. If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top, and tell subscribers about material changes.
